E-Mail

to begin...

Tamos.net replaces sendmail with qmail. Why? For the sake of being different. To try something new. To make life more interesting. To add another line to the resume. Why not? The big difference that will directly affect everyone is the fact that your inbox no longer resides in the directory /var/spool/mail, but rather in your home directory as a file called .inbox. This will make life easier and harder for system administrators since not every mail program supports this paradigm. Elm and all it's utilities are my only concern for now, but I think I've gotten everything else.

using email clients

If you are using an email client like Netscape or Eudora, and you set the SMTP server to any server dealing with tamos.net, your email will never get delivered to anyone off site. Please use the closest SMTP server to you such as your ISP's SMTP server. If you're using Eudora, you can change your password remotely using their little password changing feature.

your options

There's actually quite a bit you can do now with email. You can remotely access your inbox using a POP3 compliant mailer such as Netscape and Eudora. You can access your mail folders (as well as other files) remotely using an IMAP compliant mailer such as Netscape Communicator and Pine.

forwarding

.forward files will only take up space. You can safely rename it to .qmail to get the same effect. For more information, you can check out the dot-qmail man page.

mailing lists, filtering and forwarding

When I figure it out, I'll let you know. =)
