tamos.gmu.edu --> tamos.net migration
This document exists to explain the procedures involved in migrating all your account stuff on tamos.gmu.edu to
tamos.net. If you have any questions, please let me know.
pre-move
Once you get your tamos.net account and password via email, you'll be ready to move all your stuff to the new server.
But not so fast! Clean out your directories. If there's any email that you must
have, keep it. Otherwise, toss it. I used to go by the rule, "someday, I might find a use for this" Well, it very
rarely ever happened, if at all. (I kept all my funnies) So toss it. =) If you're subscribed to any Mailing Lists,
change the address or unsubscribe. Also think of this as a wonderful opportunity to re-vamp your web pages. =) Your
inbox won't follow you, so save any email you want from your inbox to a folder.
move
Ready? You don't have to ftp all your files individually from tamos.gmu.edu to tamos.net. There exist much better
methods, primarily archiving and compression.
- To archive and compress your home directory on tamos.gmu.edu:
nice tar --exclude move.tgz -cvzf move.tgz .
-
- To move your stuff over:
ncftp -u tamos.net
- Enter your name and password when prompted
put move.tgz
bye
-
- To decompress and unarchive your stuff on tamos.net:
telnet tamos.net (and log in)
nice tar -xvzf move.tgz
-
- Check your files to make sure you got everything and then logout.
logout
-
- On tamos.gmu.edu, remove your archive file.
rm move.tgz
-
- Start forwarding your email to tamos.net
echo Your_User_Name@tamos.net> ~/.forward
post-move
You can email me when you have tested your web pages on tamos.net and are ready to have all your pages on
tamos.gmu.edu redirected to tamos.net. I will then have the system forward all email & web pages over to
tamos.net and then remove your account from tamos.gmu.edu. Please let people know your new email address if you plan
to use tamos.net as your primary e-mail address.
