Responsible Use Policy

August 13, 1997

Preamble

The following document explains the responsibilities of the netizens in the Tamos Society. Once granted an account, you are expected to follow the guidelines outlined herein. Failure to abide by the rules may result in automatic account freezing and/or termination. From time to time, modifications and additions will be made to this document. When it is modified significantly, you will be notified upon logging into Tamos.

Accounts

Accounts will not be granted freely to anyone who asks. Only people that I, David Storey, know personally can request accounts. If you are a friend of someone I know personally, I may grant an account. If you do not meet the above requirements, but are willing to pay for an account, then I'm all ears. (money talks.)
All new account requests must be accompanied with personal information which will not be distributed to anyone outside of those involved in administrating Tamos. Personal information shall include your Full Name; any other email addresses you may have; any mailing addresses that you can receive mail from; any phone numbers that I can reach you at, including voice, fax, cell, pager. Feel free to give as little or as much information as you want. If an immediate situation arises concerning your account, I need to be able to contact you. If an administrator of Tamos cannot contact you within twenty-four hours, your account will be subject to a lock-down and possible termination. It is your responsibility to keep this information up to date with Tamos administrators.
Your account is solely yours. If someone other than you is using your account, then your account may be subject to termination. If you want a friend to be able to log in, please have them formally request an account.
Any files, including email, on any Tamos system is subject to searches by a Tamos administrator. If you would like to preserve your privacy, please encrypt your files. This is not to imply that an administrator will go through your files on a daily basis. We have much better things to do than that.

Security

I will do everything in my power to ensure that Tamos is as secure as possible. However, I cannot do it alone. I need the help of everyone on Tamos to assist me with this. I am not adverse to having people look for holes in Tamos, in fact, I'd almost encourage it. If you do find a hole, please email me with the method you used to break into the system. Please do not crash Tamos. It's like grabbing the wheel of a bus full of people and steering it off a cliff. Other people won't appreciate it.
Please, do not use easy passwords. The purpose for passwords is to authenticate you to a computer. If this wasn't done, anyone could use your account. Often, passwords are the front line of defense when a cracker attacks.

Netiquette

Don't be rude. Be nice. Don't flame. Don't Spam. In fact, if I catch you spamming, you're out with no questions asked. DON'T USE CAPS UNLESS YOUR INTENTION IS TO SHOUT! Help people, but don't condescend. Find the "man" page or web page first before you ask. (otherwise known as Read The Fine Manual - RTFM)
I will not tolerate pornography. If you are keeping pornography on Tamos and making it available to the Internet at large, I will erase it off the system without question. Art, on the other hand, is a different issue. If you cannot tell the difference between pornography and art, ask me.
I expect everyone to use the system. So enjoy.
David E. Storey
